I did that few years back. I was late for an important interview for which I was preparing since 3 months. The company was Amazon (in Bangalore, India). I was due late due to the heavy traffic as on that day one major accident happened. But I was rejected right away as they didn't agree with my reason, proclaiming it as an excuse.
